Are Tinted Windshields More Durable than Laminated Ones?

Jennifer Foster • Mar 04, 2024

Your windshield allows you to have full visibility of the road ahead while protecting you from the weather, insects, and other outdoor elements. Moreover, it shields you and your passengers from debris. Because of this purpose, choosing the right type of windshield and keeping it in top condition is vital to your safety and that of your passengers–not to mention everyone’s comfort level. Plus, it can impact your overall driving experience as well as the aesthetic of your car.

In this blog, we’re going to look at tinted versus laminated windshields concerning safety and performance, comfort, and visual appeal. Each choice comes with its own set of perks and drawbacks. So if you’re wondering which option is best, keep reading to find out more about these two choices.

Safety & Performance

First, we’ll focus on some structural and safety aspects of laminated and tinted windshields. Most windshields consist of laminated glass. This type contains an inner layer of Poly Vinyl Butyral (PVB) that is bonded between two layers of glass. The PVB itself is the material that prevents the glass from shattering when impacted, literally providing that extra layer of protection. Along with its resistance to shattering and penetration, laminated windshields remain rather clear if you keep it clean and well-maintained.

On the other hand, you can find two types of tinted glass: factory-tinted windshields and aftermarket tinted glass. In the case of the first type, a dye is mixed into the materials used to fabricate the windshield. The result is a slightly darker glass that shields the driver and passenger from sunlight and has the same durability as laminated glass.

In contrast, the aftermarket tint involves the application of polyester films that are cut to fit the window’s shape. After the window is completely cleaned, a solution is sprayed onto the interior surface, the film is applied (ideally by a professional window tinting service), and then smoothed out before it’s left to cure. If it’s applied correctly, you won’t have any issues with bubbles or dust particles impeding your visibility. One advantage relates to how the film and its adhesive hold the glass together and make it more resistant to shattering which adds to the safety aspect.

Comfort & Aesthetics

Each type of windshield also provides its own benefits when it comes to comfort and appearance as well as a few drawbacks. Let’s dig into the specifics.

Driver Experience

Laminated glass, specifically the interlayer, has some resistance to UV rays which adds to the comfort of the driver and the front passenger. Plus, it protects your car’s interior from fading and cracking. As mentioned, laminated glass does not break easily which protects you and your vehicle’s occupants since the windshield won’t cave in and cause serious lacerations. However, its shatter-resistant properties may be a downfall if you’re trapped in the car after an accident.

Tinted windshields, like their laminated counterparts, also protect against the sun’s rays probably even more effectively, considering how much darker the tint is. Moreover, you’ll gain a marked reduction in glare from the sun during the day and from the headlights of oncoming vehicles. And if you have a concern about interference to your GPS or cell phone, most film tints are nonmetallic and won’t get in the way of your reception.

However, you may have some difficulty with visibility, especially if you choose a darker shade, but this may be unlikely if your community has municipal traffic laws that impact how dark you can tint your windows, especially the windshield. In fact, in some cities and towns, car owners are discouraged from auto glass tinting that’s too dark.

Laminated Glass Features

Along with being one of the most durable types of windshields, laminated glass offers additional benefits. For example, it reduces the amount of noise that you’re exposed to while driving which offers additional safety (freedom from distractions) and comfort. The thickness of the glass effectively muffles loud sounds that you would otherwise hear on a highway or a busy street.

Plus, the thickness reduces heat, being that it also protects against UV rays. Thus, a laminated windshield keeps your car fairly cool, especially if the factory already added some mild tinting to its surface. For this reason, you wouldn’t have to bother with the additional expense of a window tint installation.

When looking at the pros and cons of tinted versus laminated windshields, your choice depends on your driving preferences and your current comfort level with sunlight and visibility. Fortunately, both options offer additional safety from shattering or ejection in the event of a collision, and this durability also reduces the chances of a vehicle break-in since a person would have to apply a lot of force to break a window.
